Hard Frost

Up until last night we had peppers, tomatoes, egg plant and my tobacco still going full tilt. Not that we had actually picked much off of any of the plants in the last month or more because we frankly ran out of room.

I was still waiting on the tobacco plants to bloom because for some reason they never did this year.

Well all that is in the past now because the frost last night put an end to all of them.

So much for this years tobacco seeds. I am not really sure why they didn't bloom this year but I did notice the plants didn't take off until very late in the season compared to what they usually do.

I guess I will now begin slowly taking the garden down and hope to give it a good tilling before Winter hits us too hard to get out there.

I could have started on it today but instead I had some (what I thought would be) minor repairs to the barn.

Work continues.

Keep Prepping Everyone!!!

  1. We had a hard frost here, 25 at sunrise. It didn't mess with anything I have as I just have fall plants now. It will make the greens sweeter.

    1. SF - I rarely if ever put in a Fall garden. Usually by the time to plant Fall stuff I am done with gardening :)

  2. The only constant is change. We've had a couple of mid-20s nights here, but the leaves are already down & the only greenery is the blue spruce.

    1. RP - Even with the hard frost we got plenty of green yet. Why I even noticed a ripe strawberry today.

  3. And now we begin to understand that having 1 to 1.5 years of food put up can still spell disaster. We get snow as late as May 31st and as early as Aug 15th, regularly. Couple that with a few straw storms in between;;;;well you get the idea.

    1. JP - I can imagine. A year and half is minimum for down here in my opinion. I would prolly shoot for 2 years minimum up your way.

  4. Bummer! We dodged that bullet last night. I still have tomatoes and peppers growing. My fall veggies are looking pretty good. I did plant some kale and lettuce seeds about a month late and they tiny and pitiful looking. It will be interesting to see if they make it through Winter!

    1. Kelly - Ya I looked this afternoon again and all tomatoes, peppers, egg plant and tobacco are completely dead now.

I had tomatoes make it into December one year if I remember right.
