Mid Week Update

Aside from the continued work on the new bee hives I finally managed to find a cat-proof seedling arrangement around here. I built cages for our seedling trays or really boxes I guess with wire mesh on top so the one cat we have who cannot resist the little seedlings can't get to them.

The other cats could basically care less about the seedlings and find laying on them to be uncomfortable but this one Pain-in-the-posterior cat just chews em up and lays on em and digs in em. So I spent most of one day building the cat-proof boxes.

I also got this router-stuff figured today and made the grooves for two more bottoms this morning that I hope to finish this afternoon after I go feed my bees. I was wondering if I would ever get a nice smooth groove cut but I finally managed it. Next thing ya know I am gonna be routering all over the place.

That's about it so far. The rain we got the other night means it will be at least another day before I can think about tilling the garden and the wood chip pile is still frozen inside. We are getting down below freezing still most every night but the days have mostly been nice the last week or so.

I had an on site visit with another local Small-Holder who has a small orchard, grapes and blackberry patches who asked if I could begin keeping some bees on his place this morning. He wants to talk it over with his neighbor since the spot he wants the bees placed in is near his neighbor's out building but looks like I will be opening up another small bee yard soon. I was actually thinking I needed to look for another location if I was going to grow to 20+ hives this year so it works out.

If his neighbor says yes then I will need to get a hive over there before the first of April....

Growth growth growth!!!

Anyway off to feed my bees more to come this evening...

Keep Prepping Everyone!!!!

    1. RP - This one is a holy terror. He drives all the other cats more crazy than he does me. We don't let this one out yet as he was the one kitten from last year we couldn't find a home for. He only goes out when someone can watch him otherwise he will end up in the road. Sasha my main supervisor is the only one who can stand to be around him and she beats his butt every morning.

  3. PP,

I've placed chicken wire over my front box gardens and the feral cats no longer visit the boxes. Maybe a little chicken wire will help you with the cats?

Congrats on getting a neighbor interested expanding your bee hives.

    1. Sandy - Basically I used a much heavier chicken wire because I knew this cat would sag actual chicken wire down into the seedlings. So far it has worked although I did catch him laying on one this morning and trying to chew the seedling that is almost tall enough for him to reach. The little varmint.

    1. Sf - All I have started right now is about 50 some odd tomatoes and 12 assorted peppers although the peppers are slow to sprout. I figure it will be another month before I can get em out.

  5. Nighean Donn and I are going to plant the planters (old egg cartons) and run through the nursery tomorrow. They have the day off from school so I took the day off as well. Where we are, I've been told there's no use planting before mid-March so haven't been in too much of a hurry.
