Sunday Reading - Switching Priorities Again!!

By midweek I had today all laid out for me. Installing a new battery in my farm truck and making sure it was still sound and road worthy then catching up the lawn mowing. By this morning that was all thrown to the side.

First I had to move the 25 old hay bales that had been left by my driveway out of the way. These were a trade in of lower quality older bales left for my to use as bedding for the animals and insulation around the foundation and traded for the much higher quality bales off my field a few weeks ago. Understandable but I still had to get them moved to continue on to the mowing step and although the heat has dropped some I sure wasn't moving those stick filled bales with shorts on.

I got about 8 moved (including broken twine) before I had to stop and rest some.

So I am about to just skip the farm truck and go right to mowing followed by needing to move my brush hog out of the old horse pasture. After three years of mowing that field and attempting to get the weeds out of there we are finally going to  hay that field tomorrow for the first time I can ever remember. Saves me from the expense and hassle of doing it myself for once. I am not sure what the yield is gonna be but switching that field over has been a long term goal of mine for a while now.

At the moment whatever we get is earmarked for cattle but the long term goal is to switch it over to a higher grade grass to be used for square bales sold for other purposes. Lambing, foaling, that type of thing. The final decision is still up in the air cause my knowledge is a bit dated these days and the common belief changes.

I also need to move the retired sheep to the other side of my pasture before they mow.

Getting this field ready could be a shorter term project but I have always found if you upgrade hay a bit more slowly you can cure a lot of ills by judging the field a year or so after a mowing. I know I already have a lot of cross over from Orchard grass, Crimson clover and Alfalfa already but have not had the chance yet to really see what is what and where like I need to. Regardless I need to use this day to get it all ready and this was just added into the mix late this week.

I also have half a tree down on part of my barn that needs removed soon too.

I was lucky in the fact that it was a fairly light tree being a Boxelder and missed the high voltage wire it was aiming for so there is no power issues nor a chance of getting hung up in one either if I can manage to pull it straight off.

As I said nothing but bad luck hit after hit this year.

Keep Prepping Everyone!!!
