Hitting a Big Snag on the Tractor Rebuild

So things were going a little too smoothly I guess on the tractor re-build. We found a new Crank, Cam, Lifters, oil pump, clutch almost everything.

The new front sheet metal is ready to be painted, been repainting other parts as we put her together. Even found a new brush guard for her.

Then everything came to a screeching halt.

This is the culprit. It's a balancer assembly for the crank shaft. Supposedly if you don't run this tractor with the balancer in place it will eventually break the crankshaft. Interestingly enough she didn't have balancer gears in her when we broke her apart. The problem is the only balancer assembly I seem to be able to find doesn't have the four holes in the corners. I even contacted a parts house in Canada that had two assemblies with the exact same casting number and had them visually verify those did not have the four holes either.

So I am stuck. Either put her back together with the original assembly without the gears like she was and hope I don't break the crankshaft or keep searching. I have one other plan that requires buying the gears and trying to find the shaft and bushings to put them in the old assembly bracket.

I took the replacement assembly to the machine shop and discovered the replacement assembly was also about 1/16th of an inch longer than the old one so drilling new holes is also not an option.

I have been racking my brain and searching/calling everywhere trying to get this issue figured out today. Not sure yet how I am going to proceed.

Keep Prepping Everyone!!!!!!

  1. What is the model number of the tractor? Have you checked craigslist nation wide at http://www.onecraigs.com
I can check and see if I can find someone around here if I knew the part number, guess it has to be for the diesel as the crank is probably different.

    1. Sf - Well the actual part number is B9NN-6A308-C The assembly is suppose to include the gears. The trouble is when ever I order that part all I get in is the other assembly and it won't fit because the two big holes don't line up and the bulge on the side sticks out further than the wall of the block.

No parts person seems to be able to follow me on this and when I show them the part they all say they have never seen one like that.

    2. Has someone put a different motor in it? Maybe you are looking for the wrong part if the engine is not a 701 or what ever your tractor is?

    3. Sf - Even if someone replaced the engine I know the replacement parts I keep getting are not going to fit as I tried them. There is supposedly only one 172 cu diesel engine made by Ford from 1956 to 1964 but apparently there is some variance in the design a bit. At least according to this part.

It can't be any other tractor BUT a 01 series 861 number though because of the two stage clutch which I do not think was offered in anything but the 01 series 861 in diesel. Even if it was a 100 series the engine is still suppose to be the same but apparently it isn't.

  2. Hmmmm. Can you press out the gears and bearings and shafts from the replacement part shown into the old frame? If the dimensions of the holes that hold the gears are the same it might work. (I suppose the machine shop considered this when they did their measurements.)

    1. John - I thought about that but with the slight difference in size of the two housings and a few other things no one is even sure the gears are compatible from one housing to the other. If I press em out and they don't fit I just ruined a 400 buck part.

    1. kymber - Oh when it does finally update to other blogs it has the proper time stamp it just sometimes takes it a day or more to update and then when it does on some blogs it is already not on the page if they only list a few blogs.

      Maddening.

I hope I can get this part issue figured out :)

  4. Ok, we got the part number. Why don't you post the serial number of the tractor as well?

Where did you get the part number? From a parts breakdown or from the part that came from inside the block?

    1. B - Two problems with that. I can't read the serial number of the engine because it has been eaten off by the battery acid. I honestly do not know what year this old girl is. I do know she is an 01 series and I do know she has a two stage clutch with a wide front end so she has to be an 861 diesel. That's as much as I know. The housing assembly for the balance has a casting number that starts with B9NN which means it was a part designed in 1959. The parts I keep getting for replacement are C0NN's which mean they were designed in 1960. The parts breakdown in the manual list the part under the B9NN number though but even when I get a B9NN part in it still doesn't have the four holes in the corners.
