Blooms!!!

What a rainy, cloudy nasty day. At least it wasn't very cold I can say that. I got the last touches of the new fence section finished up today. Managed to integrate it into the old fence line between the hay field and useless old nag pasture then closed up a temporary hole where the other side will become the East part of the ram's paddock. Finally I attached it to the out building so that complete run is finished. Now all I have to do is run the nags out of the hay field and put up a temporary fence after I put the ram into the barn before shearing day.

The next step in the fence project from hell is to make a final decision on how the main gate area is going to come together. I will have three gates all in close proximity. One for a breezeway to allow me to run the sheep from the barn lot to the East pasture. The main gate to the horse pasture and then the gate to the East sheep pasture itself. This all has to coordinate and also facilitate the water troughs as well as the entrance to the out building.

Anyway putting the finishing touches on the fence section took pretty much all day and I didn't bring the camera with me cause I was afraid it was going to rain at any minute. We got about an inch of rain over night so I was slogging around in mud all day as well.

After evening feeding was done I took a little stroll around to check out the fruit trees and found the first Apricot bloom of the year. The Peach are about to pop open now as well and the Plum don't seem to be too far behind. The Apple and Redbud trees appear to be lagging somewhat this year though but the Maples should be out before the week is done I think.

Looks like I better start thinking about putting out my swarm traps soon I guess.

Keep Prepping Everyone!!!!!!

  1. My plums bloomed out several weeks back. We had a very mild winter. Some of my other fruit trees are starting to. Lets hope we don't have a late freeze! Been several weeks since I have had a chance to get on blogger! Sounds like your moving right along! We are too, at a pace I am not sure I can keep up LOL. Been raining since yesterday here several inches already and 6 more they say four our area by Sat. Seems its always feast or famine on the rain for us. We needed rain so will just deal with it being a bit much at once :O)

    1. Texan - I am sure we will get another killing frost up here but as long as it happens after the blooms have been pollinated the fruit should still be fine.

I figured you were off playing World of Warcraft and had some big time raiding to do or something :)

  2. Nothing happening with our fruit trees, it is finally warm this week so they should be coming along. I spent the day cutting wood. Your bees are probably going nuts.

    1. Sf - Looks like it's going to stay warmish here for a few weeks. Although I am sure that will change. The bees seem to be out in force. I was going to feed them some more syrup today but the rain would have ruined it so I didn't.

In my area cherry trees have been blooming for the last month. Not bragging or anything. :)

  4. No fencing done here yesterday.....cold, wet, and windy, so all of us stayed indoors, including all the animals in their various shelters. It was a cosy day, apart from having to get those animals fed, and the dogs walked!

    1. Vera - I think it's a bit chilly and cold here yet but the animals don't seem to think so. I imagine after they are sheared next week they will think a bit differently though :)

  5. PP,

Good to hear you're getting your fencing complete. Blooms....I pray this is a good sign and we don't have a freak storm messing with all the blooms.

    1. Sandy - That seems to happen with my apples about every year. The Peach usually manage to make it through but the Apples always get hit somehow.

  6. Everything is blooming early here and I'm worried! I've lost all my apples to freeze before.

    1. HG - Ya we lose our Apples at least every other year to that late freeze thing. Maybe they will make it through it this year.

  7. I agree with Sandy..everything here is starting to bloom and I would hate for something to roll through and destroy it. glad to hear your fence is getting complete, we are still kicking around getting goats..
