Apple in Bloom

Another day without rain. I think that makes two in a weeks time. Almost unheard of this time of year although we did have heavy winds all morning that made it impossible to get anything done outside and they are predicting rain this evening. I had to go mow my dad's yard today and then was going to knock out the house we own in town's grass as well when my push mower decided to stop working. Not a huge problem as I have a second one (actually I have a third as well) but I only brought one with me so I had to turn around and go home to get a spare. When I got back to the Small-Hold we had another lamb born.

That makes number 25 now. I decided to wait on the house in town and just get the lamb tags and shots caught up instead.

11 girls and 14 boys so far and still two ewes left to lamb. Maybe only one I am not too sure Sammich is bred to be honest. I am thinking she is just fat.

I did have some time to run down and check my hives at the orchard and the owner was all smiles and telling me how wonderful it was to see and hear his trees full of bees again. He told me he hadn't had an apple crop at all in years until this last Fall and he is 100% convinced it's because of the bees working and pollinating them.  I know the girls up here are all up in the Apple blossoms we got as well.

One of these days I may even get started on some new bee woodenware in case the traps start catching some swarms.

Never enough time in Spring. Never.

Keep Prepping Everyone!!!!!

  1. Rain here today, worked outside in it much of the time but at least it wasn't cold. You have had a busy week with the lambs coming. I got a couple of Arctic Kiwi plants to try, have you ever messed with them?

    2. Interesting plant. The wife is actually rather excited about it and wondering where she can get some. I saw where some people were complaining about it being invasive but it can't be any worse than grapes lol.

I am betting I will need to build the wife a trellis for a couple now....

    3. Something invasive that you can eat would be a nice change. There are several different varieties of the cold climate kiwi. The only one that I have seen is Arctic from Lowes. It looks like they are putting male and female in each pot but they occasionally sell male and female separately. They are two pots for $15 at our location.

  2. The melon farmers bring in bees every year here so pollination isn't a problem. It would be nice to have hives and get some honey, though. I always end up buying it at the farmer's market for a pretty penny.

    1. HG - I make it a point to sell my honey at the barest margin I can afford. Many people tell me I should raise my rates but I have resisted it so far.

  3. PP,

It's that time of year when the grass just grows.....and grows....and grows.
Congrats on the new little lamb, you have enough babies to keep you busy :-)

    1. Sandy - No kidding on both. I will have to start the mowing cycle almost as soon as I get done with all this rain. At least I am almost done with the birthing now.

    1. kymber - Sorry about the snow up there. That stuff is even worse than the constant rain I am battling.

  6. We had our first two 70 degree rain free days! I had won a paid day off from my works March madness bracket thing, so on Sunday I text my boss and said I'm taking Monday for my prize lol.
I planted 143 onions and about 100 peAs of two types.
It was glorious! I bet those lambs are a blast to watch!!
