Tomatoes OMG

This is about 1/5th of the Tomatoes the wife and I attacked today. We just kept getting basket after basket of them. We canned, froze, cooked, sauced, made salsa, paste. I chopped and chopped and well we still have a few laying around. I think we got a full years supply done all in one afternoon. I managed to get several bags of my chopped and then frozen Tomatoes for Winter chili making all stowed away and I can still smell the Tomato sauce steam.

This years haul is mostly Missouri Pink Love Apples (I think they are called that because they are heart shaped) not as meaty and full tasting as the Black varieties I normally like but they mix well and are proving extremely prolific although a bit prone to getting blight spots.

Black Truffles, which is one of my all time favorite Tomatoes, some new Black Krims that prove to be just as good as the truffles. We are also still getting plenty of Russian Purples which make good sauce and the occasional Pineapple Tomato which are the best BLT making Tomato I ever had. The Pineapple ones are hard to find without pest bites though for some reason the pests really love that particular variety.

I also pulled the entire raised bed of Onions today and hung em up to dry in the tool shed and then took my honey extracting gear into the car wash and cleaned it all out.

The brace-thing I made to allow honey to run out the top of the extractor also proved useful for letting the wash water drip out as well so the extractor can dry fully. Sometimes the water gets in the seam at the bottom and kinda ferments if you don't leave the thing turned over to dry out. I can't believe I didn't make one of these simple devices years ago it's been so handy.

A little action again tonight in Ferguson, Mo. It was actually kinda lively for a bit there with McDonald's employees calling 911 for help and few other businesses looted but I am too tired to do a write up about it tonight.

Was a long day of getting some much needed harvesting and clean up done today and I need to start mowing again tomorrow.

Keep Prepping Everyone!!!

  1. Those tomatoes look good, I could use a bucket of them, too bad you are so far away. I went through the root cellar yesterday and dumped out old things and cleaned the jars so I am ready to do more canning should I get some tomatoes.

    1. Sf - Ya we are actually doing some canning this year. We used to can a lot then stopped once we learned how to do it but this year we are running out of freezer space.

  2. Jealous of those maters. I STILL haven't gotten a single red one. They are all green as grass. We're going to get ONE warmish day (today) where it should hit the high 70s, then it is back to cool and rainy. Sigh.

    1. XL - I am so far behind on melting my extra wax this year. It's been over a month since it was hot enough with enough sun to run my solar melter.

      Been a strange year.

  3. PP,
Nice looking tomatoes my friend. This was the first year I planted Pineapple Tomatoes and they're pretty good. I need to try and plant some of those Missouri Pink Apples.

    1. Sandy - We love the pineapple Tomatoes but so dot he bugs. They are a hard tomato to get going up here but the best for BLT's I ever tasted.

  4. Wow, your garden did great on many veggies this year. I was not surprised this am to see that the Guard had been called up. My reaction was what took so long.

    1. Rob - The guard didn't fit into their love fest tactic they hoped would work.

  6. Good lookin' maters. Re: Ferguson, I believe it's out-of-town agitators that are keeping things stirred up.

    1. RP - You may be right. I know one of the livestream crews I follow has a local as a guide occasionally and he hasn't mentioned out of town agitators yet but he may not be in the know for that.
