Lying Liars that Lie

Remember that view of the poor over grown and rain soaked garden a bit over a week ago? Well here it is now...

I have only a few sections left and I will be caught up once again. Not that I got anything done today unfortunately. I was too beat from work by the time I got home to do anything except check my swarm traps and remove yet another ant colony from one of them. Battling ants in my swarm traps is a constant problem here.

Also that swarm I saw yesterday was gone by this afternoon and was noticeably NOT in any of my traps. So for the first time (that I know of) in five years I lost one of my own swarms. My guess is it occupied an abandoned cavity somewhere nearby. Lord knows after this Winter there are several old hive trees available.

So the lovely Wife started a bunch of Water Melons seeds this Spring for me to plant. She had them labeled with things like "Golden Banana" and "Sugarbaby" and she asked me to plant them. When I put them in the ground they were just little things with two oval leaves same as most every seedling looks the first week of it's life or so.

I took this picture this evening....

Hmmmmm. No sprawling vines like the other Melons. It has a stalk growing up and those leaves sure do look like.... Okra (Yuck). Now it's funny that the Wife always wants me to plant more Okra (yuck) and I never do because no one but her likes it. In fact I would rather eat grass than Okra (Yuck). So you can see my problem here. Is it a simple mistake of labeling or did some one pull a fast one on me to get their Okra (Yuck) seedlings in the ground while I was thinking they were a new Melon variety.....

Looks awfully suspicious to me. The Wife of course claims complete innocence on the matter if I can even get her to acknowledge that in fact that is NOT a Melon seedling.

Then I have this plant in my Cantaloupe section.

It already has little yellow Crook Necked Squash growing on it but was labeled as a Muskmelon. I bought a little four pack tray at some plant place to add in the row because a few of my seeds didn't sprout. The other three int hat tray came up as Muskmelons but not this one.

Now that is a proper Muskmelon vine growing under that Sunflower volunteer. More Plant Lies. Imposters I tell ya :)

Tomorrow I am off work and not taking any calls because I need to get into pretty much all of my hives and I need to finish the last few rows of weeding and mulching before it rains again.

Going to be a long hot day tomorrow I expect.

Keep Prepping Everyone!!!

    1. Rob - Oh I can live without them as a matter of fact and did so for years. It wasn't nearly as much fun as having one around I admit but indeed I can live without them.

The Small-Hold was a bachelor pad for almost a decade and the only female allowed on the place were my Mother and the cat. I had a co-worker try to get me to take her dog so she could move to Oklahoma. She said her dog would talk to you she was so cute. I told her that would be a problem because we don't allow Females to talk at my house LOL. She stopped bugging me about taking her dog.

    1. kymber - even eating the Okra (yuck) fried is like eating grass with some breading. It's disgusting.
