A Sad Sad Day of Announcements

I'm afraid my pride and joy Ewe had her little lamb pre-mature this morning and it didn't survive. The vet said it appeared to be at least two weeks early. Poor Seven. This stresses me out because this was her first year as a breeding ewe so I hope this isn't a bad sign for next year as well. The vet checked her out and said she was 90% sure Seven was fine and gave her a couple shots and left one for in the morning. Seven seems ok now and is eating and moving around in fact she seems normal so I hope this was just a fluke. She didn't seem upset during her shearing and was easy to handle in fact up until this morning I was sure she was the perfect breeding ewe.

Oh well these things happen. And no I did not take a picture of the poor lamb to show you guys I am NOT Carolyn... Jeesh. :)

We still have 15 other ewes waiting their turn and by the looks of things it won't be long now.

Almost as sad is that I have had to move Oddy's Blog By Other Means down into the section of shame for posting pictures of that Peter Jackson (and his crony Feminist co-writers) She-Elf abomination Tenuvial (Sp) they created to destroy "The Hobbit" storyline.

This is an infraction almost as bad as pandering to internet chicks and posting pictures of naked Men. In some ways worse. So I have had to put Oddy's blog in time out. However I am convinced Oddy did it for honest reasons so By Other Means won't be down there long.

Just a sad day all around.

Keep Prepping Everyone!!!

    1. Ya Harry I been watching that ewe since she was born almost two years ago and she is just a perfect specimen of Female Sheepdom too. Best looking Lamb and young Ewe I ever seen. A number of people will breed their yearlings but we don't and I was expecting good genetics from her. Her mother is a damned fine ewe too so is her grandmother. The vet seems to think it's a fluke but we won't know until next year I guess now.

  3. We never sheared pregnant sheep. Stress of shearing and then the cold without their wool. We don't shear until May, but then we live in a cold northern climate.

    1. Tewshooz - We have always sheared the first of March or so, sometimes into mid-March depending on the schedule of the shearer guy but we keep all the sheep, even the rams, inside the barn after shearing in case we get a cold snap. If a preggers ewe fights the shearing we will let that one go but that almost never happens with our ewes they are all pretty much lap girls if ya want to get right down to it. We had one still birth about five years ago and haven't changed anything in the diet or care areas so not sure what is up this time.

I was just out in the barn with her a few minutes ago and she is not happy now. My guess is she is still a bit pissy from the way the vet handled and poked her... can't really blame her but she was certainly giving me the cold shoulder this evening.

  5. PP,

I'm so sorry to hear about number 7's little lamb. The Vet., checked number 7 out and thought she would be okay for next time breeding. Will you breed her again?

    1. Sandy - Ya the Vet said she couldn't explain it and gave Seven a 90% she's fine rating. I been looking in on her every couple of hours or so. The Vet also said she saw no reason not to breed her again next cycle so I guess we will see. I have number 15 who is a good looking ewe too who will be bred next season too.

  6. Sf - Well she hasn't been with the Ram for about a month now. I really hope this was justa fluke.

  7. PP -
Sorry to hear it. What a disappointment.
Sometimes things just don't work out the way you'd like. Often it seems it's the best ewes and lambs that give trouble or up and die on you.
I'm with the vet - she'll do fine next time. It's just a piece of bad luck.
