A Rough Night

I am way behind today. The cold wave that came through here yesterday brought actual temps down to about -2 but the wind chill was hitting somewhere around -22 or so and it didn't let up until about 4AM this morning when the wind finally dropped a bit.

I am definitely going to have to change some things as far as Winter heating goes around the pipes for next year. What has worked reliably for years proved unsustainable with this season's arctic blasts. Of course in a grid down situation I wouldn't have the same pipe issues I am having now either but still I need to figure out a way to direct more heated air into the basement I guess instead of running backups.

Last night was rough even without factoring in the under heated basement. I was working full time just to keep the blower going on the wood furnace full time. I finally had to just by-pass the automatic setting and go full manual and just check the blower constantly to make sure it wasn't pushing out cold air. I guess those thermostats are just not set to handle temps that low or something.

We did luck out because most of the snow and ice missed us. The Small-Hold somehow was in a corridor and the two halves of the storm slid by either North of us and then South of us for the most part on it's way East. We got maybe an inch of freezing drizzle and that is already mostly gone this afternoon.

No clue as to any other damages or losses as yet so I don't know if the bees took any casualties or not this time around.

I sure hope these arctic blasts are done and we can get back to our normal temps once again. I don't mind some cold weather at all but honestly even without having to use our propane this Winter has been a tough economic hit. We need some milder weather right now and a bit more time to recuperate.

Keep Prepping Everyone!!!

    1. RP - This one last night was almost as bad as the first one. The wind chill was just off the charts bad.

  2. So far our storm didn't amount to much, I had to ease up on the wood some as it stayed 50 or so most of the night, not often do have to worry about getting things too hot. No thermostat on my system other than the one that tells the blower that the furnace is up to temperature and it starts blowing. I change the type of wood and the damper and air intake controls.

    1. Sf - It was terrible cold once again. Wind so strong it was finding cracks to get in everywhere. I didn;t sleep at all last night because I kept having to run the heater in the basement to keep the pipes from freezing and even then the line to the barn is frozen and I can;t figure out where. I refuse to run heaters unattended so... grrrr...

    1. Sandy - I watched that part of the storm come out of Okie. The first part came from Nebraska and went North of us and second from your area and went South of us. All we got was just sub-zero temps a lot of wind and a bit of freezing rain. I don;t mind any of it but the sub-zero temps.

  4. Preppy - We went from 80 F on Saturday to 22 F (11 F with wind chill) last night. Tonight we have a chance of "Thunder Sleet". Yup, you read that right: the thunder heads were moving through about an hour ago and we have a chance of winter mix tonight (sleet/ice). To cap it all off, we are supposed to be back to 77 F by Friday. Ready for the cold to go away.

  5. You know that winter has been hard everywhere, but here in MN we have frost to the depth of 6' to 8' in some places. With the Great Lakes being frozen over the weather folks are saying our temps will be cooler then normal for the next 90 days. They didn't say how cool, sounds like our idiot law makers in D.C.
