Project Update - Well It Works

I got the frame for the hand pump put together this afternoon and even managed to glue the pvc draw pipe together and mount the pump. I still need to put the skin around the sides of the frame and cut an access panel out so that I can remove the pipe from the pump as needed and/or direct additional excess water from the rain barrels into the cistern. Then finally I need to paint the whole thing.

The first thing I did wrong was I made the frame to mount the pump on too high for the Wife. Of course if I had made it the right height for her I would have to sit down to work the pump myself. I quickly discovered it didn't matter anyway because there is absolutely no way the Mrs. is going to pump that thing long enough to get any water out of it. At least not enough to amount to anything so when it comes down to using it, it will be a one man job I imagine.

Still the thing works even if it is a bit tough to pump. After I get the outter skin put on and painted I think I am going to look for some kind of hook I can mount to the side under the pump to hold a bucket in place. The other thing I noticed was that the water down in that cistern STINKS.

The whole thing needs to be recirculated and flushed out but now at least I have the means of doing that. It was some dirty, dingy water to say the least. If we ever had to use it in an emergency it would need some good filtering and boiling besides, but at least it is there and accessible now.

If the rains hold off tomorrow I should be able to finish this project and hopefully get the lawn mowed one last time. I can't wait to scratch both those things off my list for this year.

Keep Prepping Everyone!!!

  1. Would pouring a gallon of bleach in there help?

    1. Matt - It might help. I will do that as a matter of fact I have some bleach that needs using before it turns to peroxide anyway.

I know one thing for certain. It won't hurt LOL. That water is pretty foul smelling. I think I could dump a gallon of used motor oil in there and not see much difference.

  2. I had a pump like that in my kitchen for 5 years, mine had a brass barrel. I had a foot value on it in the summer and had to prime it in the winter. It pulled water up from 35’ hand dug well, 30’ along the house and maybe 8’ up into the kitchen. It was pretty easy to pump, with a good flow. The little indentations on the end of the spout are for hanging your bucket on. If you hang a bucket lower from the frame you’ll get a lot of splash.

    1. Montanasmama - I would bet the one you had was a much more expensive model by today's standards. I should have went for a better model because this one is tough and not well put together either but I didn't know that going in and it was the only one I found locally.

Even those little hooks on the pitcher don't hold a bucket well at all. I already tried em.

    2. That has been my unfortunate experience with hand pumps. Regardless of the many designs, they all are made to marginal quality standards.

  3. So you're pumping from a cistern instead of a well? Our first cistern used an electric pump (which I know you're avoiding). Our second cistern had so many leaks you could hear the water pouring in when it rained. We've never had luck with a cistern.

If you pour bleach in it, and there's no circulation down there, it won't do much. What about building a cinder block pad for your wife to stand on. That's easier than trying to lower the pump.

    1. The deep well we have collapsed some time ago before I was around and I haven't got the extra 9K to drill it back open again at the moment. Well I got it but I don't feel like arguing with the Mrs. over it right now.

The cistern holds water well but it has been capped off and unused for at least 40 years that I know of. No leaks just needs some use. I should have bought a better hand pump though but that will come.

We also have a hand dug shallow well I could use if needed but not sure how good the water is in that one. As for a step she will have to use one but my bet is she won't bother until she has no other choice.

  4. Have you considered taking a file to the indention? looks like with a little filling and a little touch up paint and it'll work fine.

    best,
    Dan

    1. I think I must have missed something. Who would ever attack Kymber? Why that would be like kicking a puppy or something. I believe you of course, if I had seen it I would have defender her.

I don't have anything against that poster really but she was sure spreading her opinion about Obama and liberal policies before under the PP name. She was also quick to advise every female blogger around to file for divorce as well. Which I think is wrong on a very deep level but she was shown incredible amounts of tolerance so had no business admonishing anyone for not giving it to her liking.

    2. I have never attacked kymber, so don't believe Matt. I have never advised any woman on any female blogger to divorce her husband. That is a lie. And, I know where it came from. Have you seen the advice from me? Or, did someone just say I said it without proof.

As for Obama, I said I voted for him and do not like what he is doing. Gee, I cannot undo my vote, can I. What policies have I condoned? I have said I voted for him only as the lesser of two evils. That is not exactly a vote of confidence then or now.

    3. I did not even know there was kumber bashing happening. Where did I do this? When? Why would I?

Matt has no blog. He is just a name.

    4. Hey feel free to attack me all you want, I don't care.

I believe you did and so does Kymber.

    5. If you want to make something of it feel free. I am not going to go back well over a year in old postings on blogs to copy and link your arguments as to why Obama was such a great guy to vote for, how Romney didn't care and the Republicans were going to take away this and that.

In my world people pay for their mistakes.

As for the other thing I read it with my own two eyes as well. I am sure you felt justified making a call like that after hearing one side of the story and are fine with shoving your nose in another couples business but that is between you and God now.

My only real beef with you is accusing Stephen of having no tolerance for that Rat guy's drivel when in fact Stephen shows tolerance everyday to him and to you as well in my opinion. To me too truthfully.

I don't disagree with everything you say all the time but the lack of tolerance accusation was a bit much. As for attacking kymber get your story straight before you go posting that I started that. If Matt says you did I will believe him but the accusation did not come from me.

    1. SF - Thanks!!! Like I said though I wish I had a bit more experience in the hand pump department and would have held out for a good one. If anyone else does it I would not recommend a cheap 50 dollar pump. There are some out there to order but this was the only one I found available locally.

  7. Like Matt said, a bleach treatment should take care of the stink and purify the water. Somewhere, on the net, there is a table of how much to add per gallon.
