A Big Pile of ..... WoodChips

The days are slowly getting a bit cooler once again after our heatwave of last week. Still in the 60's during the day but tonight they are actually saying it will get down into the 30's. By some unexpected miracle we also got almost an inch of rain the other night which kinda messed up my plans for hauling some composted manure out of the loafing shed so I switched gears and began making some trips to the nearest city wood chip distribution place.

The wood chips that are placed there are sometimes of dubious quality and can contain a lot of bigger sticks and leaves but even with this warm weather I don't think many people are heading over there now. Which means I am loading up some quality wood chips right now.

The picture above is a full 8 foot pickup load. I don't pile it up above the rim because I learned a few years ago that was a good way to lose alot of woodchips by the time I got them back to the Small-Hold. I hope to get this load placed tomorrow and make yet another run which should take care of the normal mulching I get done in the Spring.

We will be up to 12 raised beds in the original area and 3 new beds in the garden area after I get this project finished.

Not a moment too soon by the looks of the fiscal environment I see developing. I have been working on a new long term survival/sustainable post but to be honest I haven't completely thought the matter through completely yet. I really did not believe we had reached the point of no return that apparently we have as a Nation reached judging from the last election.

The looters are in charge now. I even see players recommending the looting of their own wealth. The similarities between what we have now and Rand's world are eerily creepy except for one problem.

There is no Galt's Gulch .

I am still re-hashing my entire outlook and forming a new plan of action  for the coming crisis. I still firmly believe we are now at Prep Level 5 as time and more importantly chances to change direction have slipped past us now. The real problem is I am not sure enough remains to even recommend personal sustainability and survive in place tactics any longer.

Still Small-Hold progress remains at the top of my list. I am just not certain anyone will be allowed to keep their property at all before this is done. Anything you cannot carry on your back maybe vulnerable and before the "Golfer n Chief's" re-election I really thought we could count on at least some property rights making it through until the collapse. I am just not so sure now and that uncertainty may lead to a different direction for prepping as well.

The Verdict is still out. But until then.

Keep Prepping Everyone!!!

In the best way you can think of.

  3. Wood chips are free in most cases based on the county you reside in. Get them while you can :-)

  4. Galt's Gulch? I thought that was about ten miles off the trailhead at the nearest national forest. Also I'd skip the carrying and get a hand-cart. You can pull a lot more than you can haul, less fatigue too.

  5. Sometimes I can get a load of wood chips. I pile it up as high as I can and throw a piece of fishnet over it. Guess there would be no reason for you to have an old piece of that lying around huh?

I think all of us trying to be self sufficient are making our own Galt's Gulch. It's getting scary out there. I hate to even go into the city now and avoid it as much as possible.

  6. My antivirus says your website is trying to infect me with a rootkit. Just FYI.

  7. No rootkit notice here... I use Avast with Comodo Firewall.

As for the other, all we can do is continue preparing. Some things you just can't prepare well for. The loss of property rights is something I don't think you can really prepare for. Most other things you can.

    Nice haul of wood chips!

  8. I think hunkering down and becoming the grey man is a very wise thing to do. You have performed a great service teaching and inspiring those who visited your site. There is no need to be the mole that gets whacked.

The waiting seems to be the hardest part for me, even though getting ready keeps me busy.

Thanks for what you have done for the community.
