I Think I am Ready

Through some Herculean effort on my part I think I am totally prepared for the evil Arctic Siberian invasion now. Picked up a new battery this morning, made a run by my dad's place and got some things squared away for him. Put the battery in and the tractor didn't start...

Clicked it a few times and figured out I also have either a bad starter (which kinda makes me mad as I just put a new starter on not even three years ago now) or a bad switch. Luckily the new battery soon got the starter spinning and the Deere fired right up.

Moved four new round bales out and unwrapped em plus forked some new bedding off of them into the shelter areas for all the critters.

I went ahead and put the grain out for the sheep since I had them moved off into hay field to graze and it is much easier to get this kind of stuff done when I don't have to worry about them being under foot or digging into my pockets looking for treats. Plus that one brown ewe on the left with her head in the bale she likes to try and sneak up on me and give me a bit of a play head butt. It hurts.

Of course Nubby used the opportunity of grain unattended to help herself before the Sheep can show up and guard it. Nubby is the only goat we have that has horns straight enough that she can get away with stealing grain and get her head out before the Sheep put a stop to it. Of course the Sheep were locked in another field but still the other goats generally don't risk it.

I heard a rumor. Well more than a Rumor actually. I got a report direct from a driver source first hand who is telling me the rail road that we use here is realistically on strike now.  I guess not officially of course as that is now illegal or some such but they are denying rail service to most of their customers and calling it an embargo. Maybe this guy misunderstands or could be lying to me but I got no deliveries today that came through rail in any way shape or form. I got one small delivery of three vehicles that were trucked direct from the factory floor is all.

Just as well cause I am going in in the morning and then coming straight home early, maybe split some extra wood then closing my door, putting on warm clothes and not leaving my farm until Christmas day at the earliest.

Suppose to start hitting us with snow at 4AM or so Thursday and already be down to 5 degrees before noon. I ain't getting out in that no matter what big wig bought a 70K car and wants it this weekend. He or she can wait until next Tuesday if it ain't already there tomorrow morning.

I plan on sitting in a chair right in front of my wood stove and watching the pipe temperatures, reading a book and not moving unless I have to until this evil cold goes away. I guess I will have to feed the animals every few hours and check on them but otherwise I plan to stay as still and warm as possible.

Now I am going to go sleep like 12 hours straight to be in good shape for tomorrow. I am about done for after this day of rushing around and forking new bedding all day.

Keep Prepping Everyone!!!!

  1. This may be a "duh" statement, but it sounds like you have a "pitted" starter. Good luck with your place this next few days.

    1. Anon - Maybe!!! I replaced the starter two or three years ago as it had water running out of. I know that tractor has not had a drop of rain on it since either but it was a rebuilt one so who knows I guess. We will see how it holds up until Spring but I may need a new one then probably.

  2. Ready here. Sheep, goats, geese, chickens, dogs, and cats bedded down with plenty of feed, fire and lots of wood in house and shop, pot of chili on the Kitchen Queen, new bottle of Wild Turkey Rare Breed barrel strength in the liquor cabinet, and a good book beside the reading chair. Only thing that will harsh my mellow is if the damn blizzard doesn't show up.

    1. Anon - Sounds like you are indeed ready!!! I should have made chili now that you mention it. I should be good as long as the animals cooperate. They can do such stupid things sometimes.

  3. PP - Hope you are set up; ours is rolling in now.

RE: Embargo: Technically yes, a strike is illegal - but works slowdowns to the point of almost nothing getting done are not.
