The Great Chicken Rescue

Let me start off by apologizing. Last night when I was going to start replying to comments my computer shut down on me and then wouldn't boot up again. I think I am having power supply issues once again as they seem to want to happen about every 2 years anymore. I didn't have much time to mess with it and thought I would do so after work today.

I went to work planning on being there my scheduled 4 hours and ended up staying 12.....

The last ewe dropped her lamb this afternoon and I am so tired right now I barely stand. Going to have to get to comments tomorrow I guess.

Anyway one little story as I was finishing up the fence part of the crossroads paddock I went to get a partial roll of woven wire I had left over. When I got to it there was a chicken in the roll. She wouldn't come out. Then I noticed she had an awfully large pile of poo under her and two eggs. I think that hen had been stuck in that roll of wire for a day or two. She had somehow managed to get her body wedged into the jagged wire in the middle of the roll and couldn't go forward or backward.

I had to unroll this entire roll to get her out. All the while the hen was squawking bloody murder and was obviously convinced I was cooking her rotisserie style right there in the driveway. When we finally got her all unrolled we carried her into the coop and placed her in front of the waterer and she must have sat there and drank for a good hour. After a while she was back up and running around with the rest of the flock so I guess she will be fine.

That hen is just lucky I decided to use woven wire on the last remaining section of fence and not another cattle panel though. That and the fact it has been so cool the last few days.

Keep Prepping Everyone!!!!!

  1. Wow what a chicken story, I haven't seen anything like that. Lucky you didn't need the wire next fall and unroll a chicken skeleton. I had to pull the memory out of an old computer I use and re-seat it to get the thing to boot. Some times they give a series of beeps and you can use that to find the solution with an online search. Anyway you could reseat all of the connections one by one and blow all the dirt out of it and see what happens.

    1. Sf - I know and if it had been hot I can only imagine as well. Ya this one isn't booting because the hard drive is over heating I think. I believe I am having fan issues once again. I blew all the dirt out but I think these fans like to stop working.

  4. No chicken stories, but we had a quail land in a rat trap and break it's leg. The leg did not heal but began to dry up. Not knowing what else to do, I smothered it with Neosporin and liquid bandage. Foot complete dried up and fell off. Quail developed a pad and has merrily continued on her way.

    1. Sandy - I am surprised she made it. Had it been hot out I think she would have died.

  10. Last night when I went out to water the chickens, I noticed one was missing. After looking for a minute, I noticed feathers sticking out on the other side of the feeder. Then I noticed a chicken toe wedged between the feeder bale handle and the round body of the feeder. That chicken had been hanging upside down by her toe for at least 2 hours. Not sure if it is broken or not, as she really hasn't tried to walk much. This morning she would put her leg down like she wanted to walk on it, but would limp and not put any weight on it. I am hoping that her leg is ok, and that it is just sprained/strained. I guess time will tell!
