Sunday Reading - Melting Fast

We got somewhere in the neighborhood of 6 inches of snow last night. Not really enough to justify getting out the 8N with the blade but you know I did it anyway :)

I have had that blade on her ready for snow all Winter and I was going to use it by golly even if I only had half a reason too.

Actually we got at least one snow plow down the road this morning and he did bury our driveway a bit which is one thing even with snowfall less than a foot that makes the tractor and blade combo worth it. I can blade off all that excess they throw over the driveway with no need to shovel it out by hand.  If they really pissed me off and I didn't care about the neighbors I could push it back out into the road but that wouldn't be fair so I push it off into my yard.

When I went out to feed the critters the snow was almost too beautiful to mess up by walking through it. The dog had come inside and slept on the couch all night which meant the bunny rabbits had a Winter wonderland to play in. Several of the ewes were so happy about the snow they slept outside and were completely covered with snow when I went out. We only have one sheep that doesn't appreciate snow and rain and that's the Blue Faced Ram. He has that curly wool and a part down the middle and gets colder more easily than the others so he stays inside.

The weather guys keep saying the temps are in the high 20's but my thermometer is saying closer to 40 and the snow is already melting fast. There are still a few flakes falling occasionally but all the cleared areas remain snow free after being cleaned off. My guess is most of it will be gone by tomorrow anyway.

The sun is even trying to peak through the clouds occasionally this morning.

My guess is the next few days are going to be a wet, muddy, sloppy, mess out there around the barn though. Suppose to be colder again on Tuesday and Wednesday but after that the long range forecast is showing upper 40's and 50's once again. More back to normal temps.

I just hope this is the last real grasp of Winter and I can start getting some work done once again.

Keep Prepping Everyone!!!!

  1. I am wondering if we have had the last bad cold. I look at my tally board that I have kept over the years as far as number of wheel barrow loads of wood used and I typically burn as much in March as in any of the prior 3 months so I just shake my head and realize that April is the month to really look forward to. Of course it is warmer in the day and we will be able to get some stuff done with out the freezing temps. Your bees will probably start launching some girls before long.

    1. Sf - I have had some cold March months that's for sure. Certainly April is more a safe bet for a slow down than March but there is always a chance March can be a bit better. Usually by March I am so sick of cutting, splitting and stacking firewood I want to scream anyway :)

The bees should be building up in there. March is a tough time for the girls and a month when they are really in danger of starving as they are at the end of their stores.

  2. I think we are getting snow on Tuesday, more like Monday overnight into Tuesday. I sure enjoy fresh snow in the yard with the animal tracks in it. Stay Safe on the toy big boy.

    1. Rob - I don't usually have any issues with the snow too much especially now that I can pick and choose when I get out into it. It always looks so pretty when I first come out to it but I know I will mess it up rather quickly.

  4. I never mind the snow too much but I hate the wet muddy stage afterwards. No snow here still but there's still time this year.

    1. Kev - Usually when we have snow around here it always means there is mud under it. Rarely do we have snow that stays around more than a few days so it is usually melting underneath.

This year has been the least amount of snow for us I can remember in recent times anyway.

  5. No snow here but more cold rain today. We climb to 70 F tomorrow but back down to 41 F on Tuesday and then wander in between all week before ending up in the 60 F next week. Quite ready for Spring!
