A Kitten and Cabin Update

They brought the little cabin thing in and set it up yesterday. It was actually in two pieces each about 18'x20'. The entire thing went together in the middle and measures out to 36'x20'. After they had it together I went in and I guess I can see how one person could live in there fairly comfortably if they didn't have more than one hobby and no need for storing tools and such anyway. Not a lot of knick knacks either, or furniture for that matter. My Mother has solved that problem already by having me put some tubs in my bee storage building.

When I stopped to think about it I had to admit my first apartment wasn't any larger than her cabin and the neighbors were certainly more of a pain, not to mention rent. My quarters in the Army were actually smaller at one point I believe as well. So it is doable depending on your priorities and I suspect hers are simply to spin wool, watch the critters and be able to come and go as she pleases without any domestic chores hanging over her head or anyone to answer to.

They moved the thing with a two wheeled motorized lift that had a remote control unit hooked up to it and it fit perfectly in the spot I had prepared. As I said the other day only one small spot had sunk below level and needed to have a bit of gravel shoveled into it. The thing had been together at the sales lot and when I climbed up into the loft I found where someone had been sleeping up there. They had em a cardboard box sitting on top of sheets of packing foam and a heavy blanket set up inside. By the looks of it they crawled in like a tent and then folded the cardboard box over themselves while the foam acted as padding and insulation. Whomever was sleeping there also left one dollar bill and 72 cents in change behind. May have just fallen out of their pocket or something while they slept though because I saw no other personal items.

The electrician came by this morning and should be back to start this afternoon so that's where we stand there.

The sheep were not very happy about all the loud motors and hubbub either but they didn't run to the back of their paddock. They stayed right up on the fence watching all the action.

Coming back in I discovered that the little rescue kitten has solidly entered explorer mode finally. He has figured out how to get over the mesh gate from my Son's bedroom and now considers himself a full Small-Hold cat citizen with equal rights of movement like the big cats. Except for jumping.

He had somehow managed to get out the main door into the entryway/mudroom and was waiting there by the outside door when I came in playing with dirt of all things. He is still so small that I could step on him and not even know it though.

Funny thing about cats. I have noticed this before but why is it 99% of all adult female cats absolutely hate kittens? The neutered male cats rate the kitten at least at pouncing toy level and one of them has adopted the little guy as his baby brother but the Females will take off for the hills as soon as they see him. Let him get a bit of age on him though before we get him fixed and the girls will all want to play with him. I guess cats are just different than humans and don't go all stupid over babies although they are not aggressive to him in any way, they just don't want him near them.

Anyway he runs around now going just about where ever he pleases inside but it doesn't take him long before it's back to his room for a nap and when my son is home he follows him around like a puppy. He is learning the ropes too and now knows to stay outside the personal space of my wife's little yip dog but his lack of jumping ability is causing him some stress because he really wants to sleep in some of those choice spots he sees up there in big cat land.

So there ya have it an update on the new additions to the place. Seems to be the Small-Hold SOP these days when a new life form shows up to adjust and let em carve out their own little space. Kinda makes me wonder what will show up next.

Keep Prepping Everyone!!!!

  1. Sounds like a neat cabin, I used to live in some small places, it may surprise some people as to how little room is really needed. That little cat looks like it is ready explore and eventually supervise you.

    1. Sf - My mother likes her bobbies though but I must admit she has been limiting herself to spinning and quilting for a long time now and is slowing down a bit. She would rather be close to her horses than in town I guess and it isn't like I am short room for her little cabin. I still wonder if she is going to be warm enough in there though but she can always come into the main house if not. I guess it's better than a retirement community.

  2. That cabin's larger than my first apartment, which worked pretty well for me now that I think about it.

    1. RP - Ya I wasn't too impressed when she told me about it and all but then when I thought back to my early years I had to admit I had lived quite well in smaller spaces.

  3. Your moms cabin sounds comfy and just the right size for one person. post some pics when you can. I would like to see it. Is she going to get a porch put on?

I love the kitty. He is so adorable. To answer your question on mother cats, I think they are so sick of them nursing that she starts to blow them off. I know our male, actually took to our male boxer..guess because he was white like the kitty, the boxer even let the kitty try to suckle a nipple..and even though now they are grown, that has not changed. They curl up together all the time to nap too.

    1. JuGM - I will try and get some pics. I actually took some this morning for this post but when I was reviewing them they showed too much for my comfort. I try and not show too many of the buildings in full because we are pretty exposed on the road here.

I have seen that kitten curl up with the outside dog when he comes in. It's so funny that dog is a standard sized lab and the kitten so small.

  4. Was wondering how the little dude was doing. Glad he's adjusting to Small Hold living....or is it more like Small Hold is adjusting to him? And what's with this building? Haven't been on blogville for a while so I suppose I'll have to do some back reading. Do we get pictures of this thing?

    1. Carolyn - I doubt if I take a pic of too much of the outside structure. I had someone ID me by some pics I took of the house and barn a few years back so I started being a bit more careful of panoramic, all encompassing pics of entire buildings. I do plan on taking some inside shots though. The building is really not all that impressive outside anyway. Metal roof and normal siding kinda thing. Has a nice porch though.

This is the little cabin/shed my Mother has decided to move into. She has decided she wants to be single in her old age. Can't say I blame her really I never liked that guy anyway.

    2. I figured it was an OPSEC thing. But you forgot about the......KITTEN! You stop feeding it treats and it'll become the evil infiltrator and bring. you. down!

    3. Carolyn - He is already the evil infiltrator. I had planned on finding a home for him but I didn't realize just how young he was until it was too late. I doubt that kitten was more than three weeks old when he was dumped on that road helpless. Now it's just too late he is too attached to my son and vice versa. Had he been in a litter when mom was ready then that's one thing but raised as he has been I think it would be too cruel to introduce him to yet another home.

  5. i was hoping for a pic, too, but completely understand your reservations! but i am glad for a kitten update...you are such a big softy that i almost love you - bahahahahah! no, really, i think that you are a great guy putting up with your Mom's plans, being a good husband, planning to leave something to your son, and taking care of all of the strays that land on your land.

it's not hard to call you buddy. although it's not hard to call you wiener either - bahahahah! much love buddy! your friend,

    1. kymber - Well it's easy to be a big softy right now. Being forced to got he other way is something that still bothers me but so far we have been managing to find homes for the big excess kittens. Still you can't deal with 5 to 7 new kittens each year and not let one slip by you occasionally and worm his way in.

The Mom thing is a no brainer. I love this property but when the Wife and I were looking to buy I really wanted some place a little more secluded, hidden and with a few more trees. The fact that we managed to get this place a bit cheaper by buying it from her was one reason we went this direction but another was to help her out as well. I knew I would eventually be taking care of her to be honest. Horse women rarely have savings :)
