A State of Emergency

Well I guess I know what they mean by significant snow now. All told I think we have at least six inches already and it's still snowing. They were saying a short break this afternoon that lasted maybe 15 minutes then it started back up again. Some stations are predicting another 6 to 12 inches tonight as well.

Of course I had to get out in it wouldn't ya know.

The shop got my truck fixed and once they started closing down highways and such I needed to get the rarely used back up truck to my dad. I swing by and he took me to get my truck and I left him half my load of split wood so he had some weight in the backup truck to help him get around. There were cars off the road everywhere, some flipped over and a few way off the roads with even a  broken axle obvious here and there.

I never once saw a road crew or plow the entire time I was out. The radio mentioned something about a lack of salt and cinder hindering the various departments which in my mind is government speak for... "we spent that money on paychecks and bonuses". I always said services will be the first to go but you can bet your ass they will still want the taxes for em whether they deliver or not.

Another clue was the Democrat governor declaring an emergency so quickly. Usually we need to break the 10 inch mark before that ever happens and yet he was declaring one before we even hit 6 inches. Something is not working as promised I can tell you that.

The decline shows first in our ability and resiliency when dealing with mother nature and each year the response becomes just a little bit worse.

A Long Slow Slide.

With the snow and the forecast of rapidly dropping temps tonight I went out and gave the sheep an extra load of hay and snapped a picture of my girl. This is Seven the soon to be Queen of the Small-Hold Sheep flock. She is also HUGE now.

Here's a better pic of her. The rump you see is the Ram and she is as big as he is. Easily she is the biggest Ewe we got on the place and one of the gentlest as well. Her girth has went out so large I am sure she is sporting twins. Next year she will be penned up with her co-matriarch Kieara. Ya I am using a Star Trek theme for their names but only because Seven is actually number 107 and so you see when it got shortened...

The butcher run got canceled in January due to dealing with the cold so as soon as the weather clears we have 12 yearlings going to the chop shop.

Looks like a lot of lamb stew in our future this year which is fine considering how fast meat prices are going up now.

Judging from what I have seen of 2014 so far folks I am really beginning to think this is the year when the real slide begins. I was seriously hoping things would limb along until that creature was out of the White House but we may not make it.

And that folks is going to make the inevitable collapse way more a problem trust me.

Keep Prepping Everyone!!!

  1. You know what happened don't you? Those clowns actually believe the global warming lies and it wasn't supposed to snow. There was no need to buy all that stuff to treat the roads as it was going to be hot and people would be running air conditioners this winter.

    1. SF - Wouldn;t surprise me if that had something to do with it...

  2. While Sunnybrook Farm is on the right track, so are you. The local gov'ts aren't buying what they otherwise would, because a) the global warming lie makes it politically expedient, and b) they're running out of money.

    1. RP - Ya your prolly right. I tend to give people more credit than believing in the global warming thing.

Besides isn't it climate change now?

  3. PP,

Hunker down and stay safe and warm. I hope your sheep are going to be okay with the weather coming in.

You're right on the prices of meat going up, I would say if you can get your meat while you can. Especially if you don't have animals to slaughter and survive off of.

  4. Once again, you are right on the money. We feel the inevitable slide on our end too, and unless they pull another make believe rabbit out of their hat, we think it'll be 2014 as well. We're trying to make a major change or two that will help keep us protected.

    1. Izzy - The facts seem to be showing the holes in their plan so far this year. It is looking bad.

  5. I saw this morning about a shortage of road salt. We have enough here in MN for the rest of the winter, so they say. P.P. Stay warm, keep the home fires burning.

    1. Rob - They have blamed a shortage of road salt down here every Winter since 2008. They are cutting corners I think pure and simple.

  7. PP - i have always enjoyed, and agreed with, the majority of your observations. i think that you are on the money again with this latest observation of calling the emergency so soon. this is going to be a very interesting year for sure.

as an aside - ugh. send me some of that lamb!!! there is absolutely no lamb on this island, and the bit that is, is horrendously expensive! we know of a few farms on the west side of the island that raise their own sheep, but they aren't commercial. gonna' have to take a drive over there and try to make some friends. i love lamb and haven't had a bite of it since we moved here in 2010!!! you send me some lamb and i'll send you some kimchi! bahahah!

    your friend,

    1. Kymber - Hmmm I wonder if it is as hard to send lamb as it is honey into Canada? I should look into that maybe if it is frozen and packed with dry ice?

My wife LOVES lamb and I am pretty fond of it too. It certainly doesn;t go to waste here.
