Getting Back Into Gear Update

The last couple of weeks have been very hit or miss with me. Some days I had a really hard time keeping my eyes open no matter how much time I had slept the night before. I was just going through  a very lethargic state I guess or it may have been my mold allergy kicking in. The bright spot is that seems to be going away now as the nights get increasingly cooler.

I still have to finish up my two projects but I actually have been catching up on the other jobs that had been building up. My bet is it is safe to assume I won't need to mow anymore this year so I have been getting everything arranged for Winter now. Pulling the log splitter out and boxing in the mowers that sort of thing. The blade is back on the 8N and all parked in it's own little area with it's own door to come out for plowing activities as needed. Which I am sure won't happen before January but I am ready.

Another few days and it will be time to finish Winterizing the bee hives as well. After that comes putting away the rain barrels and the new hand pump for the cistern then back to work spreading out the piles of wood chips.

The last act of Fall will be tearing down the garden completely and giving it a good tilling then the tiller will go into storage. I will leave it in an easier location though because it will be the first thing to come out during the typical false Spring dry period. Usually that is in March.

Total vehicle repair costs for the month. Slightly over $4,000.00. There goes my brush hog once again.

Another interesting little tidbit. About 9 months ago I tried to buy a Ruger SR1911 and no one had one available. The guys said they would put one on back order and they just called me today to tell me one was available.

I was like...errrrr. I value my life too much for that right now. The wife would kill me after the repair bills we had this month.

I really wanted that pistol too :(

Keep Prepping Everyone!!!

  1. I still have mowing to do if I can catch it dry enough. I have the tillers put away as the garden is sewn in ground cover. We are doing the same thing only in different orders.

    1. SF - See I have a theory I am working on. I started it last year and by jovie I think it actually kinda helped this year.

I have taken to giving the garden a good tilling or two during the Winter months in the hopes it will stir up the bindweed roots and freeze them as they lay unprotected.

I did this last year and it really seemed to help this year some.

  3. PP,

How do you winterize your bee hives??

Maybe if you make hints to your Sweet Wife she will
    buy the gun for you.

    1. No need for that. He holds her purse for her already.

      Just do it, PP.

    2. PP,

I have to agree with Matt. Give yourself an early Christmas gift :-)

    3. To Winterize the hives you have to put on mouse guards on the bottom entrances. Then I put a couple of sheets of cheap plywood on the North and West sides to block the wind some. Finally I either put hay bales around the hives if hay is plentiful and cheap and/or put a layer of cheap foam insulation around the boxes to give em a bit of extra layer against cold.

As for just going for it I really can't. Believe me I would like to but that account is drained right now. If I dipped into one of the other accounts for the money to buy a gun the wife would wig out. Especially with the repair money we have shelled out this month.

She respects my physical prepping but that requires me to respect her financial prepping even when I think it is a waste of time.

  4. See if they will let you put the 1911 on layaway. It will make a nice Christmas present in a couple months.

    1. Duke - Good idea, I will ask. My bet is they have another buyer lined up already but maybe supply is finally out stripping demand now? Maybe?

  5. I concur with the layaway or early Christmas present suggestions. Seems like a good idea, anyway. :)
