Sickle Mower!!!

Whelp I am now the proud owner of an old Massy Ferguson 41 sickle mower. It has been used on a 1964 Ford 800 diesel for the last 10 years so I am pretty sure it will work on my 1954 8N. While I was up looking at it the seller offered me an old inline 5 foot brush hog for 100 bucks to so I said "sold" but will need to go back up and get it because I didn't have room on the trailer for both.

He also offered me the 800 diesel for $2600.00 too. I am seriously thinking about it if I can make a deal with my Dad who really wants it too. Those are some rare old tractors and I would love to restore one. I got so many irons in the fire right now I don't need to add a full tractor restoration to the list but it's almost too good a deal to pass up. To be honest I am thinking about just turning around and reselling the brush hog for a fast down payment on the tractor. Having an extra around is never a bad idea but since I am closer to hobby farm land than the seller I can get more money for these implements than he can. Most of the guys up his way just laugh at such small and old equipment but down here with people buying five acres, a mini horse or two and then putting a sign naming it as a farm, stuff like that goes for a premium.

First though I need to get the mower off the trailer and figure out where all the lube points and such are and try and find a manual for it online to print off. The blades on it look pretty old too but the belt appeared to have no cracking or wear that I could detect and the unit moved easily when I turned the PTO shaft. It does have a few field repair spots on it and a bit of after market welding done as well but for $275.00 I almost can't go wrong.

My Mother wasn't too happy I stopped working on her cabin to travel almost four hours round trip for this mower but I wasn't going to pass this up nor wait a day or two and risk it being sold before I got there. The seller was right about one thing he told me that in another couple of months implements like this will be going for 500 bucks or more.

So I am now one step closer to the ultimate goal of being able to run this entire farm with the 8N. Only about five or six more "Must have" implements to go now!!!!

Keep Prepping Everyone!!!

  1. Wow you got a good deal especially since it has been used and not rusting in a field like some that I see. It should work on the 8n and there are probably replacement parts still out there. And here I thought you were going to have to use a scythe!

    1. Sf - I need to learn to use a scythe though. I hope it works. I prolly will have to replace some teeth I imagine but it sure spins nice and free. There is a bit of field repair on it I need to look into but apparently parts are still available for them.

  2. If mowing hay, be sure to start in the middle of field and work out. Otherwise you'll have a lot of stump bunnies running around

  4. Sounds like a winner so far. If you can turn a few items to come up with the money to get other goodies, go for it. LOL

  5. Good buy I'd say. Stuff like that you have to buy when you see it. I might sell my little walk behind tractor ghis spring as I don't really use it and put the money towatds something I'd ise more.
Now what were you saying about hobby farms and five acres...

    1. Kev - You don't use the walk behind? They are great little tools if you can find one with all the implements but around here people think they are made out of gold.

LOL we got a guy down the road a bit. Bought five acres and a mini barn with two horses and put a big sign up saying Jake's Wagon Wheel Ranch or something. I always laugh when I go by.

  6. Good deal on the diesel if you can swing it. Last forever as long as you change the oil and keep the fuel clean and free of water.

Once you use diesel power you'll sell the 8N

    1. B - Oh I would never sell the 8N. It's been in the family more or less longer than I have :)

  8. Sounds good - and tractor restoration is one of the long terms things that can always be there to "work on when I get the time"...

  10. 8N production ended in 1952. see here: http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/fordnclub/
800 series tractor production (as far as I know) ended in 1962.
I would not buy any selecto-speed transmission tractor, labor cost to fix that transmission can easily exceed the price of the tractor.
