A slight Hiccup in My Winter Storm Preps

Ya the battery on my Deere was kaput. I can't believe I completely forgot about that as I distinctly remember adding a new battery to my list last time I moved round bales. I hooked my booster to it and the booster claimed it did not even have a battery attached. So provided I don't get a huge number of new deliveries in tonight (so far none but that can change quickly before tomorrow morning) a new battery is top on my list for tomorrow followed by new hay bales and bedding for the critters. I hope to be able to run and pick up another load of burnable wood ends too.

So far I have made my firewood quotas and the burn test showed everything in top shape and ready for a big burn starting Thursday when the real cold hits. As long as there isn't something else wrong with the tractor besides the battery everything should all be in place for the evil Alberta Clipper.

If there is an unforeseen glitch with the Deere I guess I will roll a bale into the barn lot using the blade on the 8N. I've done that before but it is a real pain.

I hate going up to the last minute like this but I just did not think the girls would eat so much before January but I guess in reality the grass was killed off this year in the beginning of November so it has been almost two months. I just wasn't paying as close attention as I should have been. It isn't like I can't just tip a bale or two over for them I want to take a few right up to the barn opening so they don't have to venture far out to eat it and it will be close to shovel a bunch in for bedding too. With the cold and snow we are being told is possible it can be deadly to an old almost blind sheep to venture far from her pile of cozy warm sleeping hay too.

In other news As of Mid November US tech sector reports over 73,000 layoffs this year alone. This brings the total since the Scamdemic to almost 250K layoff in tech which is more than four times the number for 08 and 09 combined. These numbers are reported to grow dramatically in 2023.

Tech Layoffs: Tech Layoffs surpass Great Recession Levels...Set to get worse.

This thing is shaping up to be the mother of all down turns.

Keep Prepping Everyone!!!

  1. Hrrrrrrmmmmmm.

I wonder about those tech jobs? Big bad Elon supposedly fired 7500 people from Twitter - and nobody noticed.

I worry that America is like Canada - exporting all real jobs to the third world... and creating 'fake jobs' here at home to absorb the displaced workers? Eg - instead of me working with structural steel - I go to school, learn tax law and practices... and get a new job and a handgun so that I can properly investigate you in case you spend over $600.00 in my new job with the IRS. Or maybe your town needs a full time pool inspector. Or several hundred otherwise unnecessary regulators and inspectors and bureaucrats of other types?

It must be a lead/lag thing? I am in mildly cooler weather right now but by the time you claim that you will be getting a Clipper... we will supposedly start warming up here...

    Stay warm you guys.

    1. PS - good battery!! AGMs are the best, generally speaking...

    2. Filthie - That was my last one but I will prolly get one again it lasted a long time for a 12 volt anyway. I am sure most of those jobs and any government job is as you say. Food inflation is what is going to hit us first since that will be the first place we will notice the loss of the petro dollar believe it or not. Our food will begin to balance out with what the rest of the world is paying and American's will not be able to believe how much they will have to pay then.

  2. PP, keep battery maintainers; "trickle chargers," on the batteries in your "occasional use" machines. I have one on the tractor, the F250 Diesel, and the Troy Bilt "Horse" rototiller (walk-behind tractor is more like it). This keeps them from sulphating and also keeps them at 100% charge. I use the Schumacker 2-amp units and they've done well. I like these units because they have good status LED's on them. When the battery's topped, the green LED pulses on and off. When it's charging, the yellow one is lit. This makes for an easy and quick visual check. If I see the yellow LED lit when I know the charger's been plugged in overnight or longer, I know the battery's gone off to Valhalla., and I can take care of it before I actually need the machine; one less "emergency..." About the only thing that leaves me to do is to check the water in the cells once in a while. ...It works for me...

    1. Pete - I have been looking into a maintainer kinda thing. That is a good idea. I haven't got it all worked out yet as I attempting to remove all electrical inputs from my barn completely. I am able to do it now but only after the natural down sizing of my old animals do I now have the room so I am planning how to arrange everything now.

    2. Perhaps remove the battery and bring it to the house to keep it charged. If you use a deep cycle battery all you'll need to do is undo a couple of wingnuts and carry the battery away. The only downside would be that deep cycles tend no to last as long as, say, AGM's.

...Why would you remove all the power from your barn? Not ridiculing, just asking... It might be worth keeping at least one outlet in there for just this kind of thing.

  3. Twitter had people working full time ironing socks and making coffee. New management fixed that, and the tech industry reacted by placing help wanted ads that specifically stated, 'If you worked for Twitter, we don't want you.' One reason is that it's almost a certainty that the ex-twits haven't worked for a living since they were hired and over-paid at Twitter. Another reason is that upper management knows that the woke sector is a royal pain and prone to file lawsuits. They'll lose, but in the meantime the company spends legal fees.

Third world contractors aren't cutting it. They can't speak English fluently, or even intelligibly. Their ability is lacking to the point where they'll do more harm than good. So...

Many companies are cutting tech labor, and it's the people they really don't need. They're cutting the overseas workers off at the knees, leaving the rest of the tech workforce intact. The message is that we the management expect you to work. We're not running a popularity contest, and if you can find a better job - by all means, take it.

One close friend of mine watched a promising intern get hired, leave after two years with the company, work three years at another company, then come back at a much higher salary. It's how you get a raise and get promoted.

Anyway... I remember dealing with a recalcitrant diesel engine in cold weather. Best wishes to you.

    1. WL - sounds legit to me. You sound like you know the industry pretty well and seems very reasonable and well thought out. I know you are 100% correct about the foreign employees lol. I worked in IT back in the 90's and watched as every higher level manager suddenly had a niece who needed a job walz right into IT and take it over. That was when I let my certs die and gave up. I couldn't compete with the niece and the need to hire more diversity too.
