Back to Fence Tear Down

It warmed up a bit more today but while the sun made things quite enjoyable to be outside working the wind had other ideas. Still I thought I should get back to work on the fence tear down before I put it off even more than I already have.

As you may remember I put up an electric fence inside the the old one to keep the %^$&*^ horses from getting out and then began the not so fun task of tearing out the old fence.

I know a lot of people would just try and rip the old fence out but I am a bit more concerned with missed pieces of wire and stuff laying around than most people. I don't have the money to go replacing tires or repairing things because some strand of wayward wire got somewhere it shouldn't. Nor do I want to be paying vet bills because of it either. I cut each 8 foot section of fence between the posts and roll/fold it up to load in my wagon to take into the recycling place. It maybe a slow uncomfortable process but at least this way I can be pretty sure I got all the wire.

The tear down is hampered by the fact that the ground is still solidly frozen however and the old woven wire part of the fence has been buried by several inches of eroded topsoil in a couple of places along the bottom making it impossible to get out until a thaw comes our way. The same goes for the posts, most of which I can re-use if I am careful in removing them. So for the time being I am only removing the sections I can and leaving the rest until the ground releases it's icy grip.

I was really hoping for a nice false Spring to come on us this February but it looks like we got one a bit earlier in January this year and another one isn't in the cards. This means I will have maybe the month of April to get this fencing project finished after the ground thaws. I really need to have the new pasture area fenced off and the grass mixture in the ground by May so it will have time to grow before it's time to turn the sheep and new lambs out on it. There's a lot to do between now and then and the weather is not cooperating very well this year at all.

This new phase of Winter this year bringing in those frigid blasts we had more than enough of last Winter are really making me scramble to keep up now once again. Supposedly we have another one heading our way on Thursday so let's hope that will be the end of them for this season.

Keep Prepping Everyone!!!!!

  1. Never a nice job ripping out fencing, normally a good way to rip up your hands as well.

    1. Kev - I wear some thick gloves when I do it. This batch isn't too bad though since it's all smooth wire and a bottom of woven. No Barbs to worry about.

  2. Have fun. It was warm here this am around 30, wanted to wash the car but it was snowed a little. But the cold is to return soon.

  3. No false spring here so far, maybe in March. They just pull off old fence wire here and leave it balled up laying everywhere to trip on in the leaves, I don't think anyone ever thought of taking a scrap of any kind of metal to the recycle place, I will never run low on old rusty metal so you are doing it right and won't have problems some day.

    1. Sf - That how they mostly do it here. Rip out with a big tractor, push it all together and burn it then I think they push the wire into a ditch or something. Must have alot of land to waste. Personally I don't have a square foot I want going to waste because it has old junk on it myself.
