Hit the ground running this morning. My Father sold his farm years ago when he retired but the guy that bought the place lives somewhere out in Wyoming or somewhere right now and rents the place out. So he turned around and hired my Dad as caretaker. What does this mean? Well it means I still get to cut wood off the place and put swarm traps there and such but also have to help with all the same old maintenance tasks I have had to do since I was a kid.
Today was clean out the culverts and remove overhanging trees day. The driveway to the old place is about 2 miles long and has several runoff culverts under it that get choked with leaves this time of year while the dying trees that overhang the drive way are always a problem.
Usually I try and wait until it's too wet to get out into the mud before I worry about harvesting the trees along the old driveway. I can pretty much get to them anytime I want to but today seemed like a good day to cut and rake leaves.
After I got done there I had to get the wire run around my new bee hive area. It wasn't the prettiest fence line I ever put up. In fact it was so bad I don't even want to take a picture of it. I was in hurry and used those lighter metal posts that have the clips already on them for hammering down on the wire. I didn't realize however I had two different types and so the clips didn't line up as level as I would have preferred. At least it will keep the old nags out which is all I am worried about.
Then I had to get the truck unloaded and collect up all my logging chains for tomorrows trip to get the last of the old Oak trunks I been cutting. After that I will have to unload everything and take my hive stand materials down and get them leveled and have everything ready for the next hive move coming Monday morning.
It's been a busy weekend and doesn't look to let up anytime soon.

ReplyDeleteSf - It was actually a bit too hot today to cut wood. I was sweating pretty good and under the tree canopy too so in the shade. I think it hit abut 70 at least today. Suppose to start cooling off fast tomorrow afternoon.
DeleteWe've had a few nice days as well. It's amazing how much I can get done when the weather is with me. I need to get back to cutting wood, mr brother has my saw at the moment to fix it for me as it won't start.
ReplyDeleteYour dads old place sounds like a good place to hold up. A two mile driveway is quite a distance!
Kev - It is pretty secluded and hidden but these days it surrounded by suburbs and not very far from a small city (about 100K). I doubt it would remain hidden for long but the terrain off the roads around here is pretty rough for the most part.
DeleteAs it stands now I should have enough cut to more than last the Winter, at least once I split it up. I plan on cutting as long as the weather allows me though as my reserves were almost all used up last Winter. I need to build them back.
100k! Only in Scotland could you get very far from a city in the UK. We're about half an hour from two small cities and around here people say thats remote!
